In our uncertain times more people are finding themselves working remotely.
Having worked mostly remotely over the past many years, here is a few things that I have learned.
Have a Separate Workspace
Have a dedicated workspace whether that is a separate room or even just a desk in the corner, is a huge benefit to just working anywhere. If you “go to work” by going to your workspace you can create a separation from the rest of the things you do in your home. If you work on the couch or the kitchen table it is much more likely that work and home will blend together to the point where you never leave work.
Take Care of Yourself
Take time to exercise, to eat properly, and sleep an adequate amount. Without a commute and probably more flexibility with your schedule it can be easy to forget to do the important things that don’t seem urgent. All your extra time can quickly fill up if you don’t carve out specific time to take care of your self.
Learn to Communicate Effectively
Going from being a step away from your colleagues to working mostly alone can be a jarring experience. Figure out the best way to communicate without getting overwhelmed. Always on chat can have it place but can also be a constant source of distraction. Each person and company will have there own system. For me, using email for passing own information, saving chat for more urgent matters and for the occasional personal talk, and either phone or video chat for deeper discussion; seems to be the best solution.
Find Your System
Browse online and you will find numerous different morning routines, time-tracking systems and other strategies to work effectively. You will probably need a little time to find a good groove that works for you. Keep trying different things until you find that right fit.
Expect Challenges
While it comes with a number of benefits, working remotely can also come with a number of different challenges. Everything from loneliness, unproductiveness due to procrastination, and numerous distractions. Recognize the challenges as they come and figure out ways to overcome them.
Embrace the Advantages
We are at a unique place in time to take full advantage of the benefits of working remotely. Make the most of it and enjoy all the benefits, including have more time and freedom.
